Christmas is a busy time of year at Tavern Tasty, a well stocked butcher’s shop near North Walsham

The family-run Tavern Tasty, at Swafield, near North Walsham, is all set for the festive period, with Christmas orders being taken and the shop all decorated with fairy lights and more!

With an emphasis on a personal and very friendly service, with experienced staff, Tavern Tasty has a comprehensive range of goodies available now and even more so over the Christmas period.

Provenance is everything, with much from the family’s own farm at nearby Smallburgh, plus other well regarded local farmers who offer high animal welfare along with premium quality products.

Home-grown pork and lamb are top of the list, with the family farm producing traditional breed pork, Gloucester Old Spot, British Lop and British Saddleback, and Southdown lamb. Gloucester Old Spot is also produced for the shop at a farm at West Beckham, near Holt.

Claire Hudson, whose family runs the farm and shop, says their beef comes from cattle who graze behind the shop. ‘They are from a farmer at Thorpe Market but he uses the fields behind us.’

Chicken is from the highly respected Sutton Hoo in Suffolk and free range Bronze and White turkeys and geese are from Great Grove, near Attleborough, with Norfolk Black turkeys from Peele’s, near Dereham.

Add to this both smoked and unsmoked bacon, pigs in blankets and joints of gammon, with several delicious glazes available including a beer and mustard one which caught our eye.

Their homemade sausages are well known and include both traditional flavours and a couple of more alternative combination ones including cheese and marmite, and, for Christmas, turkey and cranberry.

The shop is also offering three bird roasts for the Big Day, with variations on turkey, pheasant, duck and so on, and roasting joints are especially popular as the chilly weather takes hold.

New this year and something for all of us who love to entertain, is the range of ready to cook meals. Prepared by the butchers themselves, you can choose from dishes such as garlic mushrooms, Thai chicken, lamb stir fry and stuffed chicken breasts, and we hear great reports of their Beef Wellington!  It certainly makes holding a posh dinner party seem much more appealing.

As the shop boasts a large kitchen, Tavern Tasty offers freshly made pies, quiches, sausage rolls, Scotch eggs, pork pies and the rather amusing but yummy Black Quack, a Scotch egg made with a duck egg. We love the sound of the Cold Cutting Game Pie which is a firm favourite with many year after year.

Finally, the shop is offering that real Christmas crowd pleaser – hampers. Three different varieties are available and they are great for families who enjoy good food. There is a Christmas meat one which includes a turkey breast roll, a bumper meat one which has a 10lb free range turkey, and a Boxing Day hamper which features a 1kg cooked ham. All include condiments and various other delicious treats!

Also look out for chutneys from Candi’s Chutneys and Garden Preserves, rapeseed oils from Crush Foods, cheeses such as Mrs Temple’s Binham Blue from Norwich’s The Cheese Truckle, and condiments from Stokes Sauces in Suffolk. Norfolk Apple Juice is also on sale.
