Inside Cannell’s Farm Produce

A new farm shop in South Norfolk is stepping up to offer an exciting programme of events as well as a comprehensive range of local produce

Inside Cannell’s Farm Produce 2Cannell’s Farm Produce may well flatter to deceive as you approach it on Langley Trading Estate, at Chedgrave, near Loddon.

But step inside and it is a veritable Aladdin’s Cave of local goodies, with everything from a wide selection of fresh, seasonal fruit and veg from local farmers to Norfolk and Suffolk gins, jams, cheeses, breads, chocolate and more.

For a start there’s a deli counter which serves up Marsh Pig charcuterie, cheeses from the Lincolnshire Poacher, and wonderful pates and terrines from Blackbird Cottage Foods, plus artisan breads from Hempnall Village Bakery.

And as for the ‘life’s little luxuries’ area? Well – who can resist gourmet chocolates from H&J at Beccles, gins from the likes of Black Shuck and Bullards, cocktails from Cocktail Canaries, jams, pickles and preserves from The Garden Pantry and coffee from Give It Some Beans. We like it all – a lot!

Add in a good selection of local craft beer, oils and sauce from Yare Valley Oils, fresh juices from Maynard House and, just new in, a selection of gluten-free biscuits, cakes and scones from the North Suffolk Pantry – and we spied tasty Blackbird Cottage quiches, sausage rolls and Scotch eggs which are always such crowd pleasers.

There are also lots of life’s essentials – household items, store cupboard favourites such as flour, pulses, nuts and the like, plus beauty items, including the ever popular Faith In Nature brand of eco-friendly shampoos and soaps.

It’s no wonder staff report that customers are swapping the supermarket for a trip to this foodie emporium where you can buy just about everything you need – and that includes your Christmas tree!

Owner Steve Crisp only opened the shop last year and is delighted with the response. ‘We just wanted to be a hub for the community – and we are so pleased to know that’s what we have become. We can react quickly to what people want, and we are always adding new lines. We are a great team and have all become great friends – Emma, who joined us this year, and I are visiting all our local producers to get even closer to them and fully understand their production, and we are looking forward to sharing these visits over social media and with our valued customers.’

Fruit and Veg Boxes
Boxes are delivered on Thursdays and Fridays, fresh for the weekend, free of charge for orders of more than £10 and within a 10-mile radius of the shop. A vegetable box costs £19.95 and is packed with seasonal produce, while a fruit and veg one is £24.95 and always includes a little treat – perhaps some gorgeous local fruit juice. Who doesn’t love a little surprise?

Cannell’s Tasting Club
A new club, packed with exciting ideas, is headed up by Emma Jones who runs Modello Events, a corporate event management company specialising in high end hospitality events, especially around Formula 1. This small friendly tasting club allows people to learn more about their local suppliers and enjoy a fabulous evening in a Covid safe environment. It launched in October and will run an extensive range of events through 2021.

Here are a few pre-Christmas diary dates

  • December 4,5,6 – Cannell’s Christmas Extravaganza:
Try and buy a wide selection of Christmas goodies where, alongside usual ranges, there will also be lots of hampers, gift boxes and gift-wrapped items on offer as well as the chance to sample much of the produce, and sip a festive tipple or two.

Expect a special visitor on the evening of December 4 as Santa calls by, and there is a festive hog roast planned for December 5.

If you can’t visit in person, simply give the shop a call and the staff will help you make your choices – they will even deliver them for you, too!

  • December 5 and 12 – Wreath Making Workshops – with Bubbles
A firm favourite with many of us where you create something very special for your own home. All equipment and flowers are provided plus plenty of bubbles, and the price is £45 a head. December 6 is at 2.30pm and December 12 is at 10am and each workshop will last a couple of hours.
  • December 12 – Bullards Gin Tasting
This is the only live tasting session that Norwich-based Bullards Gins is holding in the run up to Christmas. The distiller produces four quite distinctive gins, including a new Coastal one – although here at Feast we love the Strawberry and Black Pepper number. Tickets are £20 per person and just don’t bring the car! The evening runs from 7-9.30pm.

A real treat for wine lovers as Chet Valley’s John Hemmant helps you choose your tipples for the festive period.  He is super fun as he talks about the vineyard’s history and describes his wines, which includes the delicious Skylark. Tickets are £22 a head and include charcuterie and cheese boards. The evenings run from 8-9.30pm.

  1. This shop has come on in leaps and bounds. Steve and his team work so hard. I run the Charity shop for Parkinson’s uk on the same trading estate. I suggested to Steve that Loddon & Chedgrave needed a deli and it certainly works. We all help each other along with Simon Peck at the White Horse. We work hard but have a lot of laughs.
