Best of: Butchers

Here’s our round up of some of the leading butchers in Norfolk

Archer’s Butchers

Best of: Butchers 2This year Archer’s, headed up by the always smiling Jamie Archer, has a large selection of locally sourced goodies including free range, dry aged Bronze turkeys from Great Grove in Caston, near Attleborough, Norfolk Black turkeys from Peele’s Norfolk Black Turkeys, near Dereham, free range chickens from Sutton Hoo, Suffolk, Himalayan salt aged beef from William Almey near Gunton, outdoor reared pork from Tim Allen, near Fakenham, and locally sourced lamb from HG Blakes, Frettenham, near Norwich.

The deli boasts homemade pies, cooked meats, and all the trimmings and accompaniments from local suppliers including a variety of Norfolk cheeses and chutneys. For those of you who cannot make up your minds, there is a selection of hampers, priced between £35 and up to £140. This year, Archer’s is offering a delivery service to the vulnerable, and setting up a separate shop for a ‘click and collect’ service for website orders, thus keeping queues to a minimum.

OId Hall Farm
Woodton, near Bungay

Best of: Butchers 3Farm shop Old Hall Farm in Woodton has a wide range of meats available – and more – for your festive needs. Reared directly on the farm, their rare breed pork is sensational while the beef, a Jersey/Angus cross, would make the perfect centrepiece for New Year’s Eve. Their sausage meat makes fantastic stuffing and sausage rolls, and they also have a wide selection of local game for those looking to ring the changes this Christmas. You can download an order form from their website, covering everything from meats to dairy and wine. They also offer meat hampers, which really do take the effort out of organising everything, leaving more time for you to relax and enjoy yourselves. Old Hall Farm can also be found at Paddock Farm Shop in Mulbarton Thursday to Saturday, 9am to 3pm.

Morton’s Family Farm
Skeyton, near Coltishall

Best of: Butchers 4Morton’s Family Farm has been keeping Norfolk well stocked with turkeys for generations and this year is no exception. Whether you want a full turkey, a crown or a breast joint, their Norfolk Bronzes are a great choice. Delicate in flavour and truly free range, the Morton’s turkeys are legendary for a reason! If turkey is not your thing, they also offer beautiful free-range geese, chickens and cockerels. And, with their own smokehouse on site, you can even buy a smoked duck breast. Morton’s also stock all those added extras, including turkey sausages, stuffing, and pigs in blankets, that help to make your Christmas table complete.

Tavern Tasty
Swafield, North Walsham

Best of: Butchers 5Based just outside North Walsham, Tavern Tasty is a family-run butchers, with pork and lamb from their own nearby farm – and beef from cattle grazed just behind the shop! There is always a wide selection of pies, quiches, sausage rolls, Scotch eggs and more – plus, for Christmas, turkey and goose. A new and expanding range of ready to eat meals such as Boozy Beef Parcels and Chinese Chicken Stir Fry are also on offer. Add in a decent range of goodies from local producers, including cheeses, chutneys and fresh bread, and there is much to admire. Expect plenty of banter, too.

Arthur Howell

Best of: Butchers 6Arthur Howell and his family have been supplying locally-sourced turkeys to their coastal community for more than 130 years.

He says: ‘You should always buy from a traditional butchers or reputable turkey producer. Make sure you order your bird in good time. You need to order it now to ensure you get a turkey that’s the right size for your oven.
“Ask for a bird that has been hung for between a week and 10 days before being dressed, and ask your butcher for the giblets as well so you can use them to make turkey gravy.’

If you fancy a change from turkey this Christmas, Arthur recommends a joint of the finest beef from his Williams’ dry-ageing fridge, made in King’s Lynn. ‘It’s absolutely delicious,’ he reckons.

Arthur also supplies fresh fish and seafood, deli items and cakes, and will deliver within a 15-mile radius of Wells. Here at Feast, we love his locally-shot game, too.

Intwood Farm

Best of: Butchers 7Set on a working farm just outside Norwich, the Darling family keep their own cattle, pigs and lamb. For Christmas, you can also choose from locally-sourced turkeys, chickens, and wonderful gammons – plus an ever increasing range of condiments and extras such as delicious smoked salmon from Staithe Smokehouse in Brancaster Staithe. There’s also an Intwood Farm Christmas Box at £24.95, packed with homemade sausages, sausage meat, bacon, stuffing and more! Feast is a big fan of their sausages – especially their jumbo hot and spicy ones – and the salt beef is divine! Local deliveries are free and there is also a click and collect service.
