Sarah Hardy finds out more about Norfolk’s only home-produced mustard range, Montys

Today sees the launch of a new mustard powder for Norfolk, Montys, which is big news for all fans of home grown artisan foods.

This full bodied mustard powder is the latest product from Sarah Savage and her Essence Foods business which she runs with her sons, Edward and Archie, who are both in their 20s. 

Sarah explains that Montys has become the only single estate mustard in Britain, saying: ‘The mustard was grown and harvested around Reepham in 2019 and has finally been made into a powder – it has been a long time coming and we are incredibly proud of it.’

Essence Foods, established in 2005, incorporates three different brands – Essence Botanicals which produces jams and marmalades, Montys which creates mustards and chutneys, and Beetella, a range of chocolate spreads which contain no gluten, nuts and are dairy free.

Sarah, who used to own the popular cafe Logans in Norwich city centre, opened The Old Dairy Cafe at Stanfield, near Dereham, last year and it operates as both a daytime cafe and as the headquarters of the family’s food business.  All the goods are hand produced at one end of the building, which has a decent sized window so you can see what is going on in the kitchen, while the other end is home to a serving counter, a little shop area and plenty of seating. There is also a lovely enclosed courtyard garden, where all manner of herbs are grown in raised beds and with a lavender border, plus more seating out the front – which also boats a large grassy area where children can let off a bit of steam.

It’s a lovely, friendly place, with Sarah explaining: ‘We make everything ourselves apart from the breads. We use herbs from our own garden, local suppliers such as Savory Beef from Gateley and we have a new wild game producer so we should have venison sausages before long.’

And yes, Montys Mustard is used in many of the treats, including the cheese scones, cheese straws and in sauces and marinades. It’s also perfect in a ham and mustard sandwich! 

The Old Dairy Cafe opens Tuesday to Saturday, from 9am to 4pm. Breakfasts are served, along with lunches and there is always a good selection of cakes. How does orange and rose cake sound?  It is dog friendly and is available to hire for wedding receptions and other events.

The cafe currently opens for outdoor dining only but will open fully when allowed, hopefully on May 17. Lunches are set to include choices from The Kitchen’s Table which will feature hearty salads.

All products are available from the shop and online. Look out for the conserves and marmalades made with lavender, which the family grows, as they were one of Sarah’s first products.
