Simon Thompson of Bungay greengrocer Giddens and Thompson has that summer feeling!
As Easter approaches, we feel we can begin looking forward again. Many of our customers are starting to gain more confidence in coming back to the shop, especially if they’ve been lucky enough to have had both of their Covid vaccinations. It is lovely to see familiar faces once again – even through a mask! There is definitely a sense of greater optimism now that people feel there is a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel.
With huge numbers of people planning on taking their holidays within the UK this year, I think we can safely foresee a very busy summer ahead of us. I have a sneaky feeling that this may be a bumper year with our strawberry sales! Most of our strawberries come from the renowned Sharringtons in Norfolk who, over the years, have perfected the art of growing summer fruits.
As much as I love strawberry days, excitement is growing daily as the asparagus season is almost upon us. Time for me to dig out my special asparagus pan – if you don’t have one, get one! They are amazing – it is basically a basket you put your asparagus in, and then into a special pan, and it steams them to perfection. Just add some olive oil, salt and pepper, and you have the tastiest, easiest side or salad ever, especially if you put a poached egg alongside.
It is wonderful to see so much great salad produce becoming available as the days go by – a sure sign that brighter days are to come! The delicious mixed salad leaves we get from Clinks Care Farm are second to none! Again, add those to the asparagus and poached egg, also from Clinks Care Farm, and you have a lovely, fresh, local dinner.
One thing that we haven’t talked about so much is how many prices skyrocketed in recent months. I always try not to pass these on to the customer where possible, so it has been a huge relief to see a great many of these begin to level out again.
Easter is the next big event, with fish and lamb being popular choices for the dinner table. We have so many vegetables, and even fruit, to go with these dishes, and are always able to get special ingredients in if you give me a little bit of notice.
So all in all we are feeling decidedly positive about the coming summer, with lots of visitors expected to our gorgeous little town and some amazing local produce to keep everyone’s taste buds happy.
