Dawn Hopkins tells us about opening a deli in her Norwich pub
Who are you and what do you do?
I am Dawn Hopkins and I have been a pub landlady for 20 years. I am Vice Chair of Campaign For Pubs and am now the owner of Queens Road Deli at The Rose, in Norwich.
How long have you been at The Rose and where were you before?
I’ve been at The Rose since March, 2003 – it is easy to remember as my daughter was only a few weeks old when we bought it! Prior to entering the pub trade, I travelled the world for two years, and before that I worked in London for a commodity trading company running their IT help desk.
What’s special about wet-led pubs? What beers might we find on offer?
The Rose specialises in craft beer. We like to source beers from innovative and creative breweries, beers you won’t find in the supermarket and beers to be savoured and talked about.
How has the pandemic affected what you do?
Pubs have been forced to close three times during the course of the pandemic and have been subject to very strict restrictions even when we have been able to open. I have been unable to trade for the majority of the last 12 months.
What gave you the idea for a deli counter and will it continue as lockdown eases?
The idea for Queens Road Deli was born of frustration from not being able to trade, combined with what my local customers told me was lacking in the area – a shop specialising in quality local produce. The Rose reopened indoors in May and the deli will operate the same hours as the pub and will close at last orders, becoming a late night deli.
What can people buy – do you feature local produce?
As much as possible we feature local produce including fresh meat and charcuterie, tea and coffee, vegan pastries, handmade chocolate, dog treats, cheese, chutneys and much more. There is a plethora of amazing local produce for us to choose from, and the quality is outstanding.
Any more future plans you can share with us?
We will soon be taking the deli products online and will also be offering tastings and food and drink experiences in collaboration with local producers.
