Norfolk chef and deli owner Charlie Hodson offers us his latest edition of his Diary of a Norfolk Cheesemonger

Summer is here and our beautiful county of Norfolk is gearing up for its busiest time of year as it seems everyone is trying to find an idyllic bolthole for their annual holiday right here with us!

At the deli and cheese room we love sharing our joy of all things food and drink, especially those produced by local artisan suppliers, whether it is coffee, cheese, jam, cereal, chocolate or charcuterie!

We are heading out ‘on the road’ soon as we are supplying food and drink to The Festival of Sport, a child-friendly sporting event taking place at Holkham from August 13-15. It is a chance for young ones to have a go at numerous different sports and activities, without pressure but with the help and encouragement of many leading sporting stars, affectionately referred to as legends. They include rugby player Mike Tindall, rower Anna Watkins, tennis player Olivia Nicholls, TV’s Steve Backshall, footballer Dean Ashton, and SAS Who Dares Wins star Jason Fox.

Festival of Sport co-founder Will Greenwood, told me: ‘We recognise that not every child gets involved in the same way. Our mantra for the festival is that ‘no-one gets left on the bench’. It doesn’t matter if you’re a budding junior champion or just want to stick your toe in the water and try something new. There’s something for everyone.’

We have been planning what we want to offer food wise for months, and building, as ever, some great working relationships with fellow local suppliers.

We are working on delicious breakfast ideas with Sam Bagge and his Walsingham Farms Shop team, including using black pudding from The Fruit Pig Company from near Wisbech who, in turn, use pork from Tim Allen who farms in North Norfolk! Add in coffee from Chris and Jo from the Filter Box Coffee Company and the first meal of the day is looking good!

We’re working with Coxfords butchers from Aylsham on Norfolk tapas-style goodies for the first night celebrations and we’ve even created a new sausage roll, The Holkham, (what else) just for the Festival.

We are manning a deli counter at the Festival for lunch options, with cheese from the ever wonderful Catherine Temple – whose farm is just miles from Holkham where more than 1000 people will be camping for the weekend – plus tasty charcuterie from Marsh Pig, who are based just outside Norwich.

The Festival also has a further 15 food and drink concessions from our region, ensuring all taste buds are catered for! And I really should mention Anglia Catering Hire, too, who are proving to be indispensable.

It is all working towards being a great event and anything that promotes fitness, wellbeing and local food – all in a glorious setting – is something to be supported and applauded!

Note – This column is dedicated to the memory of Alan Miller who worked for the Holkham Estate and was a big part of the Festival of Sport. He is sadly missed and never forgotten.
